GUESS WHAT!!! MY SHOP AND I ARE GOING TO BE ON TV NEXT WEEK!!!
you read that right!!! NEXT TUESDAY. ABC FAMILY 930 AM EST. I dont even know where to start with this so let me explain...

A few weeks back, I was contacted by a sweet With Lavender and Lace customer who works for CBN (christian broadcast network). The network is located in Virginia Beach and is associated with Regent University (a bunch of girls I photograph go there). So anyway, her name is Ashley and she is awesome! She was working on a Valentines Day piece and wanted to know if she could shoot some things in my shop! So her little crew came, asked my friends and I questions about love and things. It was such a delight! but thats not all... My new friend Jake Hull happened to come during that time and him and I have been working on a little music recently.. and wouldn't you know that we happened to have a brand new song we were practicing that day and they asked us to sing it for the piece!!!! So, the song is magical and its called "Cradle" written by Jake Hull and I sing on it with him!

It was seriously such a special memory and now the piece is done and it will air on ABC FAMILY nationally (and on CBN.com internationally monday 11am) TUESDAY at 930 AM EST. FREAKKKKKOUTTTTTT. Im so excited for the world to see a little bit of my shop and hear Jake's song. I hope you can watch it! I also hope i dont look like a dork but thats neither here nor there..

anyway, I am still in semi shock but I feel nothing but excitement! Hopefully we will reach some interested people whether with the music, with the shop, or with our words of love!! Valentines Day Miracle I say!! Here are some photos from the interview thinggy.

hey! sorry for my slight disappearance, I went to new york for a few days but I have a bunch of awesome things to share today. first I want to say THANK YOU for the response to my song 'Gardenia'! It was so heartwarming reading comments here and on my facebook about how you felt about the song. I am so happy to know that it was heard and actually listened to. thank you for that! I am actually trying to finish up some unfinished pieces and then I will record them! then they can be yours! amazing how that works.

ANYWAY. this past month has been busy for my shop/blog/life and there has been a few bloggers that have been super sweeeeet enough to post about some of my things! these posts have made me smile so widely!!

She graduated from CNU (Christopher Newport University) and she took me to a handful of good thrifts. we ate food and explored the Nolan Trail for a bit. She is so cute RIGHT! Something amazing happened in my shop last month! I havent gotten a chance to share it here yet, alas, TODAY IS THE DAY!

So, since moving to Norfolk, there have been many special things falling into my life and The Later Sun is one of them! They are a marvelous group of musicians and people that I am so excited to be able to know! In december, the lovely group came into my shop and sang a song! This is the video! ENJOY!

I turned 22 years old this year!

this year i accidentally shot my first ever roll of film twice. This has never happened to me before but it was amazing to see the images for the first time!

This year, I 'suffered' my last final finishing never again REVIEW BOARD! thank goodness this part of my life is over.

OH HEY THEN I FINISHED COLLEGE. THEN I GRADUATED. WOAH.

Then we packed up. hugged our friends. threw a party. then moved away.

Then we started fresh fresh fresh in a new city. weirdest time of my life, the first few months here were so wonky.

then a few friends and I made an adventure to OHIO where I shot my first film wedding in YEARS. it was a wonderful trip. I love a good adventure. here are details. the first look. the bride. wedding party. the ceremony.

On tuesday, my deary ariel and i drove 12 hours to the north to visit friends and family in my old homey new england state.. MASSYCHUSETTES. Coming back to Boston for the first time since we moved has been something I have been looking forward to for weeks and weeks. We havent been back since we moved in early July and Ryan hasnt seen his family since then! So we packed up the car and rode into the sunrise. Sigur Rós and Jonsí were our top two passengers. the drive was wonderful!

Since my adventuring this season has been smooshed into only a little bit a week, I've been reminiscing in beautiful images of Sister Winter from Boston and New York that I took last year. This is one of my absolute favorite parts about being a photographer, the visual history I create for my forgetful future self. These moments were all so special to me, as they still are in so so so many ways!

I am happy to have these photos to bring back those perfect chilly memories. This weekend has been good for the shop, many fun things have happened and lots of friends have visited (I love that). Last night, these AWESOME older rockabillies came into the shop and were hanging out because they had a show at the bar that my shop is connected to... anyway, one of the took his shirt off to show off his tattoos! It was amazing and so funny, Most hilarious and awesome thing to have happened in the shop since it's been open. I think im going to make a BOOK OF AWESOME THINGS to put all of the crazy cool things that happen in the shop.

also, I thought I'd share some of my yesterday here. I spend most of my three days off restocking. The area I live in is absolutely massive suburban sprawl.. which make a sweeeeeet place to thrift. There are different sections of the city that I cover each day. Yesterday began with breakfast with my mother at our favorite little Village Inn, then we went to Michaels to stock up on some stain removers and a bunch of goodies I am sure I dont need... (heh)... THEN IT BEGAN.

good gems EH? I also found the most perfect sewing machine in SEAFOAM! along with a NEVER BEFORE USED camera bag that looks like a purse... you know what I am talking about? they are so awesome and so expensive but I just got seriously lucky and found it! ALSO, I found jackpot jewelery.. maybe 75+ pieces? It was so successful! then.. at like 10pm I had to do laundryy

And today I am getting a little bit of a late start but I have a few special things today..Meeting a new friend for dinner, sorting out jewels.. a kelsie photoshoot (!!!!!)

for so so so many things this week/weekend!

I AM SO THANKFUL FOR MY ITTY BITTY SHOP. This past month has seriously gone by like the wind leaving me semi breathless and with the fullest heart I've even owned.

I am so thankful for my mother! She really helped me this season get my shop together when no one else could help. I am GRATEFUL for her and her loving heart!!

I am so thankful for my sassy sister, she has been amazing to Ryan and I this past summer and she also happens to be the most hilarious and cool person I could have even imagined to be in my life!

I am so thankful for this new apartment and our new little life here in Norfolk, Virginia!

I am so thankful for my MATTHEW.. he has been my friend for so long, I am so happy to get to live with him now!

I am so thankful for this wonderful community of people who have been so supportive and loving even after only knowing me for a short time...I am so happy they are all in my life!

I am so thankful for the pretty leaves! I was so sad to leave Boston because it is SO BEAUTIFUL in the fall... But to my surprise.. Virginia has been very very beautiful this fall!

I am so thankful for having finally felt my heart be at ease with the way life is moving. This year has been up and down and up and around but I am so excited about where it is going. Thankful for my forward moving self-realizations..

and I am so so so so so thankful for my Ryan Hickey!! We are both working our butts off right now to reach our dreams and I love that we can hold each other accountable like that.

and last but not least, I am so thankful for the little things that I am finally having the time to absorb, make, create, listen to, and enjoy.

Housewarming!

I am very excited to be hosting my first ever housewarming party tonight!! The new place isnt quite perfect yet... in fact, we are actually short a ton of housewares... Since the move from Boston was so expensive, we rented the smallest truck and most of the space in there went to my vintage merch... we left so many beautiful wares behind! So we have asked friends and family to spend a dollar or two on some kitschy stuff from their favorite thrift store to bring.. in exchange for a tasty treat-filled party with music and wine and sweet people! I cant to see what kind of things people will bring.. WHAT A FUN IDEA RIGHT?

well! besides that, my THIRD week of business went just as smoothly as the week before and I am really excited about this weekend! It's BLACK FRIDAY (insert ghoulish ''oohhh'' here) and I will be having my first ever SALES RACK! along with really cute gift certificates available for purchase. ALSO, saturday is Small Business Saturday and I've arranged for a baker friend to make some delicious treats for the shoppers. Be sure to shop local this weekend! okay, I LOVE YOU ALL!

One Week of Business!!!

Well, It came and went.. it conquered and went amazingly smooth! This first week felt like a surreal dream, people coming from all around the 7 cities to visit the one of a kind shop in this area. With every new face and customer, my heart would swell! And I cant thank you bloggers enough for posting things about the shop and leaving the KINDEST comments, :) you all are my inspirations!!! I only hope that if you have any questions or ideas or want to be apart of my shop here, please contact me! I want the shop to be about our specific community of creative and innovative lifestyles and help others find little secrets into making their lives a little richer with art, treasures, creativity, and an inspiring artistic community.

So, now that the shop is open.. I will have more time to blog.. but I dont really know what to blog about (as far as the shop goes)... so I'm just going to give a little info about how my first week went.. The shop is only open from Thursday to Sunday so I have three days to restock and have a home life and get errands done. I think, on average, I will be working on/in/with the shop about 60 hours a week (including restock day, and working on marketing things..) The shop is tiny enough that I am the lone lady in charge of getting everything done and ready for each day. The first week of business went amazing! With little to no downtime last weekend, I have sold nearly 150 items in my first 6 days of being open (which is such an amazing blessing), and now that things have begun to slow down a wee bit, I've got some time to reflect...(and sleep, heh)

I havent had the chance to mention that a few days before the opening, Ryan and I moved into the area where my shop is located. We are FINALLY living in our own space within walking/bike riding distance to our jobs and I'm just now getting around to unpacking and decorating the new place. I cant wait to show pictures! Its so spacious with TWO PORCHES and a kitchen with a door and window to open to let the evening breeze blow in.. i am in LOVE with it.

I need to catch up on SO MANY POSTS here. Hopefully I'll get another done in the next hour or so.

Hello Beautiful People!!!!!

Thank you all for your support of my new OPEN boutique and for bearing with me while I couldn't help but be quiet while I scrubbed and priced and created it. I have a heart that is absolutely AT FULL CAPACITY after so much love and support from local friends and family to the ones on the other side of the world. I OWE YOU ALL a great big hug! anyway, today has been my official first day in the little shop.. we've had like 15 customers and already reached our daily goal and I am just happy as a peach! Im now sitting on my little Lav and Lace couch near my favorite scented candle listening to beautiful Nathan Phillips' album "Postcard", expecting some folks here later.. I am so happy to be able to SIT DOWN and type to you all. I want to share so much with you about how this happened and the ridiculous amount of work that it took, but I feel like that might be a drag so I'm going to share more instagrams. My Iphone has been my one real photo tool with me these past weeks so I've collected a nice collection of little moments that are so special and so necessary to present the progression of this little magic place. enjoy!

I am opening a boutique!! IT'S REAL IT'S REAL IT'S REALLY REAL!! THIS is what I've been working on all week and for the next few!!! trying to get things clean before I move all of my beautiful things in!!! I am so excited to offer this kind of business in such a pretty little area. The store is tiny and perfect.... I've been planning for days and days and days... I am having a blast figuring out each step and SO MANY beautiful people have entered into my life who are so excited with me! Together, With Lavender and Lace will become a community of loving and artistic peoples and be a small staple in their creative lifestyles! I am ECSTATIC to tell you all now! This is such a special thing and I have all of you wonderful inspirational blogettes to thank! You're all so wonderful!

I am elbow deep in decisions and dirt and ideas but these next few weeks and going to FLY by and soon, I'll have ALL DAY LONG to blog and share my new friends and make things while running the shop.... Well, Needless to say that this weekend was a KILLER one. Seriously folks! The flea market was a blast, AND I HAVE AMAZING NEWS coming to the internet by this weekend! A total game changer!! MORE COMING SOON. (this is 1000% freakout material too, havent been able to calm down for like 3 days)

ANYWAY.. here you will see a few new pretty faces in my life right now. Ariel in the red lipstick, sweet as pie.. a world traveler and people lover! She is moving to Iceland super soon!! SERIOUSLY. when I was a freshmen in Boston, I used to use this phrase whenever I'd get really freggin excited about something... followed shortly with a slightly audible explosion sound. It was hilarious and when I found Kara's blog... I immediately felt connected. haha That sounds so silly but I dont care!

these were all taken on one of our favorite pocket cameras.. THE PONY. We love its experimental ways and the non view finder focus... getting better at that makes me feel awesome. seriously, I've never been good at Holga cameras and this is basically an early version of that. Its all just a guessing game! Anyway, these photos are a nice little representation of our current city. Norfolk is all about the boats and water and ports. I personally find it very charming and I have a really good time just walking around near the water (when its not raining or 1000% humidity)

This week started out very strange but wonderful. I've made an important decision for With Lavender and Lace.. now I am just seeing where it leads me... I'm really excited to be entering a new part of my life and learning how to work for myself. Its been a giant and semi broke blurr... but hopefully when its all over, I'll have something wonderful to show for it...

This past week I spent some time making little things like this to sell at the flea markets coming up. My mom and I slaved over a hot glue gun and made a ton of headbands with fake flora. These little bows were my own project I whipped out in an afternoon after staring at my ribbon pile. Theres not much that I do with ribbon besides put it in handmade books for pockets or on the front covers as embellishments. But I LOVE a good ribbon roll, whenever I see one at a thrift store.. its GOT TO BE MINE. So, I put my thinking cap on and decided to make some delightful little bows to sell. If they dont sell, I may put a few in the shop. I know there is a ton of stuff out there like this but, hey, Im digging the green and mustard velvet ribbon RIGHT? MMHMM and those little blue ones.. they really make me happy! Here are some detailed shots for yaaaaaaa...

Hello Internet friends!!
Sorry for my recent delay in posts. This week has been long but wonderful. here are some highlights!!

-----Ryan got a new job!! He is now head sound engineer with The Virginia Stage Company. This has been the best development for him and I am SO thankful that he is happy!
-----This week I spent a ton of time working on handmade goodies. I've decided to work flea markets in the area and my first one was supposed to be yesterday but it rained! boo!
-----I began a detox diet thing to clear my system of junk. Its been a rough ride (I'm just not a dieter), BUT I have seen significant changes in my energy and moods. GOOD NEWS.
-----Yesterday, I had my first official girl day with a new friend Kari! We saw a movie, went to a cafe, made things, listened to stuff, and just were girls. It was special!
-----My friend Nate got the Fuji X100 digital camera and shot these photos of me today on a walk around our neighborhood! (thanks knate)

I guess thats it. haha. I suppose I need to get a part time job soon.. hmmm. WHAT have you guys been up to? drinking lots of pumpkin flavored things I bet. I love reading all the autumn posts right now!!

Ryan and I have started a tradition of Wednesday Date Days. He works full time now and only has off sundays and wednesdays. So we've dedicated wednesdays to doing something fun on a low budget. Last week, we went hunting the city for postcards to send home to Boston, with no luck. We found a little diner to have brunch and we only spent 16$ on a tasty filling meal! Tomorrow, we're going to see a movie and go bowling (with coupons!).

i made this gif image in like 2 seconds when I've been thinking for years that it would probably be the most complicated endeavor. hilarious. I'm getting ridiculously excited for this weekend.. WHY YOU ASK? well, because I am blessed enough to be meeting like 20 gorgeous babes who are going to help me out by modeling my 200+ fall glam pieces for With Lav and Lace Vintage! Actually.. we arnt shooting this weekend.. BUT we are meeting and greeting. There will be snacks and fittings and note taking and portrait shooting. I am really excited to make some new friends here in virginia! I love my boys but WHERE THE GIRLS AT. im sorry im acting wild! haha its so late and I was nose deep in fake flora and tape for a greater part of my day. actually, i'll share some instagrams!! I actually just started using this app like a month ago. I was super skeptical for a while because any app pretending to replicate film is something i find super silly (being a film photog, i have this right!) haha but once i started playing around with it, i LOVE IT. and i love the idea of having them printed! They are sort of like a sloooooowwww polaroid because they will take a while to have printed but they provide immediate satisfaction and being able to post them where ever i like (facebook/twitter/tumblr), it just keeps me sharing itsy bitsy details! i find myself photographing things i seriously never even notice with my film camera. ITS EXCITING.i'll be back with a fresh roll of film tomorrow! <333333

getting ready for the storm

hello world! as some of you know... RIGHT NOW hurricane Irene is headed for my house. I live on the very corner tip of virginia above north carolina and things are getting scary! Seriously this week has for sure been the weirdest week of my life. from an EARTHQUAKE (I still cant believe this one) to a giant hurricane right as the season begins.. things are weird right now!!!

My first earthquake... I was in my studio on the 4th floor of an old building in Norfolk, Va while trying a fishtail braid with some string for a book mark... I thought it was just a GIANT gust of wind at first so I looked outside to see the trees steady as a rock. Everything was SUPER quiet and then everything began to shake!!! my table... racks of clothes.. things started to fall off my walls... I WAS FREAKING OUT. haha my knees were wobbly when I stood up and ran to the back porch to see what was happening! I held onto the frame while plants were falling everywhere on the porch and I looked down into a neighbors pool to see WAVES! not ripples but WAVES! Completely confused and freaked out, I ran downstairs and out the front door hoping to be greeted with people who were just as weirded out as I was but instead.. NO ONE CAME OUTSIDE. hahaha everyone was at work! I just stood there with sweaty palm and shaky knees as i quickly called Ryan. He hadn't felt anything. He told me I should walk to a coffee shop or something just in case. I just ended up going back upstairs and figuring out the truth about what had happened. a 5.8 on the richter scale about 4 hours from me! WHATTTTT.. so strange!!

anywho! We are bracing ourselves for this GIANT hurricane. I've been through dozens of them but this is the first to hit us before other states.. meaning it's wind and rain will hit us VERY hard. We have decided to rough it out at my sister's house in Virginia Beach. We've stocked up on foods and waters for a few days because I know in storms like this, this area looses power for DAYSSSSS. here is a little info about what a strong category 2 hurricane is possible of... flash flooding//at least a 10 foot water surge during the storm in low-lying areas//tornadoes (hopefully not)// power outages for a week// no water//

as scary as it sounds, i know my family and I will be safe during this storm! I only hope other people on this area realize the power of Irene and are ready to hold on if they decide to stay!! Im going to be away from the blog as long as power is out (which will hopefully not be very long..) but i will be posting pictures and updates through my phone of the storm on my instagram and on my twitter. if you want to see how we're holding up.. just check in on me there! wish us luck guys!!

This was my FAVORITE handmade book yet! i just loooove this fabric (seen here). I yanked it from a vintage blazer and im so happy i still have a ton left because the day i finished this litte baby, i took it with me to a coffee shop and a friend bought it from me right there! It was made with really epic drawing paper (which brand has slipped my mind) but its great for pens/pencil/markers/collage/photographs. I also stuck a vintage photocard in the front and some beautiful gold thin decorative paper for the most pleasant opening experience. I also attached a pretty new bookmark made of rose burlap. Doesnt it look like the best place to put your ideas and doodles?!?!

I feel like such a proud mother after I finish these things. They take all day and by the end I have glue all over my arms and pieces of fabric in my hair and the biggest mess ever on my table/floor but it feels so good to hold the little gems and know someone will fill them with life!!!! I've just recently turned my attention back to my books because its what I love love love to do and Im planning a GIANT reopening of the book shop with a large number of journals in the future. I also have a ginormous FALL clothing shoot coming soon with about 20+ girls ive never met and a hair/make up stylist. EXCITED. <3

Dan and Sonja did an AMAZING job with the decor of their wedding, taking DIY to a WHOLE new level. I mean seriously folks, take every wedding you've seen on your favorite blogs and mash them all together. THAT was this wedding. The most beautiful treat of a weekend EVER. The beautiful newlyweds spent months and months preparing for this thing! from making THREE different wines to creating mini living rooms all around the yard for guests to converse! not to mention Dan designed the programs and all the cupcakes were made by their friends! WEDDING OF MY DREAMS.

I made a book for the couple who's wedding I shot last weekend. they liked it! so happy!

loveeee book binding! i will start up again once i get a few hundred items in the vintage shop... jeez thats exhausting. but after a rough weekend ( someone rear-ended us in my "new" car that i've only have for like 2 months and i think its totalled ): we wont know until someone comes to look at it next week) DEPRESSING. but at least we're both alive and well, apart from some serious neck sorness on my end... well, i guess things like this just happen... im not too torn up about it, its just something else to worry about YOU KNOW. (getting another car AGAIN) but it other news, we had a really lovely storm yesterday and it inspired me to put up more shoes! (im drowning in SHOES yall) so go take a looksies.

this past weekend, some friends and i went to Plain City Oh to shoot/sing a wedding there. on our way, we stopped in Greensboro to pick up Allie! Al took us around the city and it is super cool there! we visited some vintage shops and this AMAZING art collective/ living museum called Elsewhere. It seems to be the place where dreams come true.. be sure to visit the website because its something special. Elsewhere.

my own little love, ryan hickey! he turned 22 today. we made it back just in time to spend the day with him! he is such a special person to me, he moved away from his home in Massachusetts to live with me and start a little southern life together. so far, its has been a BLAST! we've been in virginia for just about a month and he has rounded himself up a few jobs including selling audio gear at guitar center, helping load in and load out shows all around hampton roads, and working with a theater on sound production. His time is just starting to fill up and i think he might be starting to like it here(??) but anyway, im SO HAPPY i get to spend all my time with this guy. he is hilarious and handsome and my best friend and I hope he had a GREAT day today and for the rest of the week!!!

after a BEAUTIFUL weekend away shooting one of the most gorgeous weddings OF MY LIFE, i am happy to be back and even better, happy to be back to work.

for this weekend, i've borrowed and AMAZING lens from a friend to shoot the wedding with. here are some examples of it's magnificence!

ITS AMAZING RIGHT!!!!!! these are completely digital BTW. and straight out of the camera! freak out! anyway, yesterday we hung around this place in Ghent (norfolk) called Stella cafe! it just opened and we LOVE IT. if you live in norfolk/virginia beach you must go if you love coffee! they roast their own beans every morning!!!

anywho. i'm off to venture around a new city! north carolina, you're pretty!

i'm getting ready for a trip this week! on wednesday, caleb is coming down to virginia and we're hopping into my car and driving to greensboro, NC to pick up my friend allie. from there, we're headed to plain city, OH for the wedding of new friends of mine, DAN and SONJA (future) LYON. be prepared, i've been hired as the wedding photographer (!!!!!!) so there will be many many good things coming to this blog soon. also, of course you'll get the run down of the trip with photos everyday. the whole trip will last a week!

i took a few senior portraits of ryan's little sister Erin. since i shot some digital, ive been playing a bunch with the color. this was my first one!

so this is what i've been up to! apart from using the weekends as seriously relax time. cant wait to show you the space now! also, this photo was the first sketch of my inspiration space.. since this was taken, its already been demolished and reconstructed! so you're just seeing a small phase of the space.

more to come, i still need to share like 3 portrait sessions i shot before i left boston, 3 new books, my updated website (nearly finished), and i want to make gifs out of photos of a thunderstorm yesterday! these are things i want to get done. my list of things i need to get done makes these nearly invisible!!!!!!!

tomorrow is a big day for me, (i think). its my first day with the studio finally set up and ready to work in (!!!!!!!!). I've got myself on a schedule for the whole day and blogging is my first task! see you in the AM!

soo, yesterday was a very hott but a pretty good day. I got new car insurance (all by myself!) and i reopened the vintage shop! Feeling pretty adult! i found a dress form on craigslist that im going to pick up tonight for vintage selling! as for the store, its looking pretty barron right now so i hope to put some shoes up tonight if i can figure out a new position/set up for lovely shoe presentation. just keeping the blog updated. Im also tring to figure out a new header (im sort of hating the one up there right now).

so, sweet danae from this earthly tent posted a few things about my blog yesterday and it was super sweet! shes one of my first real bloggy girl friends and she's got a great blog and a big heart. She recently got into film photo and her work is so dainty and lovelyyyy. i especially LOVE these photos of her apartment and living space.

so, we're living very cheaply with my sister until we can move into the apartment where my studio is. my sister has two doggiess and wih sprite, three cats! we've never been so covered in mamals before. its been soo fun. we love taking the pups for walks! (when its not scorching outside)

my friend aaron brown is great. he made me a "miss you" mix and its really reallly sad and lovely! we listened to it on the road while watching the city disappear behind us. a memory i will keep forever.

also, I have a hard time looking for new music because when i am on the internet i already have a vey busy agenda... aaron helps me out by making me AMAZING mixes. he is so special! (and good at finding excellent music)
